Taking the bath out, properly

Walk-in showers
in London.

The most common change we make. Removing a bath and forming a walk-in enclosure gains usable space, but it moves waste and supply, and it puts far more water against the wall.

What it involves

Taking the bath out, properly.

Swapping a bath for a walk-in shower is the job most often done badly. The tray or former has to be bedded solid and laid to a genuine fall, the waste needs a run with adequate gradient back to the stack, and the enclosure has to be tanked to full height and 300mm beyond — because a shower puts water against a wall for far longer, and with far more force, than a bath ever did. Get any of it wrong and the failure appears in the flat below rather than in your room.

About walk-in showers

Questions we are
asked most.

Will I regret losing the bath?

It depends on the household. If you have small children or a single bathroom, we will usually advise keeping one. Where a property has a second WC or an ensuite, a walk-in shower almost always gets more use and makes the room feel considerably larger.

Does removing a bath affect resale?

Estate agents will tell you a family home should retain at least one bath. If this is your only bathroom, that is worth weighing. In a flat or an ensuite it is rarely an issue and often a selling point.

How do you stop it leaking into the flat below?

Two coats of liquid tanking membrane, taped at every internal corner, pipe penetration and floor junction, over primed moisture-resistant board. We photograph the tanked room before tiling and send it to you, because once tiles are on nobody can verify it — including you.
